Sketching bottle trees in outback Queensland

The bottle tree growing on the Mitchell side of the road bridge is a magnificent specimen; a living statue that welcomes people to Mitchell.

Bottle trees come in all shapes and sizes, and some are so weird you can scarcely believe they are real. For this reason, you would think they should be easy to sketch.

Right? But, no, from experience this isn't the case. After numerous tries I still can't draw one that I consider to be okay.

Nevertheless I will continue to try because, for me, they are symbolic of outback Queensland and Mitchell in particular-- and I love them!

  1. They appear to be almost a hybrid of two trees I have seen before, but they do look unreal. I've never seen one before in my life and this is the first time hearing about one. Very cool.
